GIRLS ROCK LOUISVILLE VOLUNTEER JOB DESCRIPTIONS
POSITIONS WORKING DIRECTLY WITH CAMPERS
**There will be a volunteer orientation session held the day before camp starts. Please plan to attend this session as well as one of the two mandatory volunteer training sessions in May (Dates TBD) if you sign up to volunteer! Camp Counselors, Workshop Leaders, Instrument Instructors, Band Coaches, and Band Manager positions are open to individuals who identify as female, trans (regardless of identity), or non-binary/gender non-conforming.
Instrument Instructor* (Music experience required)
Time Requirement: Monday-Friday of camp, 9 AM-12 PM plus training/orientation meetings and planning time with fellow instructors.
Our campers possess a varying range of age and skill level, and many have never touched a musical instrument in their lives. Now it’s time to teach them what you know. We need Guitar, Bass, Drum, Vocal, and Keyboard instructors. Instructors will work together in teams to provide basic instrument instruction in small-group sessions (generally 3-5 students per teacher.) We ask you to meet with your fellow instrument instructors in advance to decide on a curriculum and what style / level of experience each instructor is comfortable teaching. (We are happy to provide resources and give ideas to help get you started.)
Band Coach* (Music experience required)
Time Requirement: Monday-Saturday of camp 12 PM-4 PM plus training/orientation meetings, showcase concert on Friday, and record session on Saturday.
Band Coaches are assigned one band to help prepare a song for the Showcase. You will help the campers throughout the week in learning how to work together as a group, both musically and personally. Based on what the campers are learning in their instrument instruction classes, you will help the band structure a song, write lyrics & song parts and practice, practice, practice to pull it all together. You will help by guiding the campers as they move through the stressful experience of preparing for their performance, keeping a watchful eye on when the band may need a break or a specific camper may need some time away to decompress. This position combines well with an Instrument instructor position for a full week of volunteering.
Band Manager* (NO music experience required)
Time Requirement: Monday-Friday of camp, 12 PM-4 PM plus training/orientation meetings, showcase concert on Friday and record session on Saturday.
Band Managers serve on a team with the Band Coaches for individual bands. Because the most important parts of the job are ensuring the campers’ safety and giving them support and encouragement, non-musicians are welcome in this job. Band managers help with getting equipment that might be needed in the band room, they help with possible conflict resolution and being a positive and supportive person in the band room during band practice.
Morning Camp Counselor* (NO music experience required)
Time Requirement: Monday-Friday of camp, 9 AM-12 PM plus training/orientation meetings.
Morning Camp Counselors serve as mentors for assigned groups of youth, which involves checking in with them every morning, making sure the campers are where they need to be, and offering advice and help throughout the mornings of camp, and communicating their needs to the afternoon band managers. Since the most important parts of the job are ensuring the campers’ safety and giving them support and encouragement, non-musicians are welcome in this job.
Workshop Leader* (NO music experience required)
Time Requirement: various, mornings and afternoons during the week of camp. Contact Jerika Jones for more information.
Workshop leaders will teach various hour-long classes based on their interests and experience.
