We are so excited to announce our very first online camp! Rock Camp Online is a space where youth who identify as girls, femmes, gender non-conforming, and trans youth of any identity can learn music, discover & express themselves, create collaboratively, and become leaders in creating their own kind of digitally-based music! Usually, Rock Camp’s main program is a week-long music camp where campers learn to play an instrument, form a band, write an original song, and perform live at the Showcase Concert. The global pandemic has prompted us to re-imagine our programming.

Rock Camp Online will be from August 3rd-August 7th from 1pm- 4pm EST, each day. In order to include all of our youth, we will be utilizing Soundtrap which is a web-based music education platform that is designed for collaborative music creation! This website is COPAA approved, so it is safe for youth under 10 to participate in. We will also have lessons that youth can access at any time, as well as practice exercises, on our Google Classroom that will be linked to Soundtrap.

At the end of the week, every band will have written, recorded, mixed, and produced a song with the support of their band coaches and youth leader. Each of the songs created during the studio session will be presented during a Listening Party. Our Listening Party will function as our showcase and is open to all of our families, friends, and community!

A Virtual Camp? How Does That Work?

The main programming of virtual camp remains the same as usual: a five-day music camp where youth form a band and write a song together.

Students will progress through 3 livestreamed, 30-minute “active learning” sessions:

Instrument Instruction from 1pm-1:30pm
Independent Music Practice
Studio Sessions from 2pm- 2:30pm
Mentor Check- In from 3pm-3:30pm
Online Workshop 3:30-4pm

Because this is an online program, we will be focusing our workshops on re-imagining the digital space:

Digital Feminism 101, Building Your Power Online, Experimentation and Music, and Music Makers Make It! Want to do a workshop? Contact Kelly Weaver at kelly.weaver.1@louisville.edu
